Stratification

Definition

(formal/academic) The hierarchical arrangement of individuals, groups, or phenomena into distinct layers or strata, based on criteria such as wealth, status, power, or other differentiating attributes. In sociology, it refers specifically to the structured inequality between different social categories. In geology, it denotes the layering of sedimentary rock. Often collocates with 'social', 'class', 'economic', 'rock', 'thermal'.
